Welcome to the preliminary webpage of Lake of the Woods Speedway! We have been getting a lot of questions about the project and we thought it would be a good idea to share some of the early information on our plans so far. While things may change as we forge ahead, this will give you some idea of our direction. Hopefully this will help clarify some of your curiosities:

1. What is Lake of the Woods Speedway?
The speedway is planned to be a short clay/dirt oval track, about 3/8ths of a mile in total length with medium banking.
2. What kind of events will take place?
The plan is to run Stock Car Racing primarily in the summer (From May to September) as well as the possibility of demolition derbies, go-karts, and other possible motorsports events. In the winter, Sled Racing (Oval and possibly Snocross) as well as 4-Cylinder Ice Racing is also planned in the short and long term.
3. What type of Stock Cars are going to be racing?
For weekly racing, the plan is to have 4-Cylinders, Pure Stocks, and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. There is also the possibility of invitational classes such as WISSOTA Modifieds and Late Models for larger events.
4. What does it cost to get into racing myself?
There are a couple ways you can become a race car driver. You can purchase a new car, used, or build one yourself. Prices range from $2,500 to $4,000 for 4-Cylinders, $4,000 to $6,500 for Pure Stocks, and anywhere from $8,000 to as much as $30,000 for a Midwest Modified. 5. What are the rules for building a racecar?
All classes have standard rules to keep the cars as equal as possible on the track. The specs are built so that the engines are similar in all cars, suspension, and so on. These uniformed rules also allow these cars to travel to other tracks that also host the class such as in Winnipeg, Morden, Greenbush, and Emo. At this point, Lake of the Woods Speedway has not formally accepted what the rule packages are for the 4-Cylinders and Pure Stocks. WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds are a sanctioned class so their specs are already available at www.wissota.org.
6. Where is the track planned to be located and does it meet zoning bylaws?
The track is currently planned to be built on Jones Road, North of the Railroad and Hydro line in zoned land for "Heavy Industrial" which in definition of the zoning bylaws for the City of Kenora, allows for a wide range of industrial uses, which by their nature, may generate noise, fumes, odours and that may be obnoxious or hazardous. Some limited complementary and service oriented uses are also permitted. The location of the track is about 10-12 minute drive from downtown Kenora with access from both the by-pass and Highway 17. We are required to go through a site plan process.
7. How will the facility be maintained?
We will take all steps necessary to make sure the facility is clean, efficient, and minimize possible environmental issues. This includes recycling depots for used oil, and proper management of the grounds in terms of overall cleanliness.
8. What are rules and regulations on the cars for noise level?
Race cars are generally required to have mufflers in cases that the decibel levels are too high in the immediate area. This will help to decrease the amount of noise travel at further distances. Not all cars are created equal. Pure Stocks and 4-Cylinders are noticeably quieter while on the track racing than a WISSOTA Midwest Modified or Modified. All cars are required to be approx. 100dba or less at the source.
9. You mentioned it is a dirt/clay track. What about dust?
While the racing surface is of aggregate material (such as clay and dirt), there is a science in prepping the track by watering it and packing in the loose material to create a racing surface. While dust may occur as the surface dries, it is in the best interest of the program to minimize dust issues as much as possible. Low dust levels will maximize the fan experience and make sure that drivers are safe when racing.
10. When will events take place once the track is built?
Early public survey responses state that Friday nights or Saturday either daytime or evening are best. While there has been no decision made yet on the actual day of racing, Friday nights works best with the closest track that runs the same night is over 375 km away. This can help to maximize fan attendance and driver travellers.
11. How long is an average Stock Car Racing Event/Program?
A racing program is generally 3 hours or less in length, depending on the amount of cars in attendance. Racing is split into heat races which are usually about 3-5 minutes each in actual racing time, (there can be anywhere from 3-12 heats in an evening) and feature events are about 8-10 minutes in race time each depending on track conditions (One feature event for each class). There is a 15 minute intermission between the heats and the main feature events.
12. What kind of economic impact can the speedway have on the city of Kenora?
Stock car racing has had a significant impact on economies in many communities. It is estimated the economic spin off at the Emo Speedway in Emo, Ontario is almost $250,000 with only a population of 1,200 people. The economic spin off at Winnipeg's track (www.redrivercoopspeedway.ca) is almost $2.5 Million! The track will help to increase hotel bookings, fuel stations, restaurants, parts stores, and overall tourism spending and visits. It is estimated that the economic spinoff for a track in Kenora would be approximately $1 Million annually.

The plan is to start construction in 2016 and be completed by the end of that year.
15. When does the track plan to open?
The track is planned to open either winter 2016/2017 for Sled/Ice Racing or Spring 2017 for Stock Car Racing. If anything changes, we'll let you know.
